What Are Veneers?

Illustration of dental veneerIndividually crafted to look like natural teeth in shape, size and colour, veneers are made from porcelain or composite materials. One of the most appealing benefits of veneers is they offer patients a fast and effective way to achieve a beautiful smile. This procedure isn’t as complex or invasive as other types of cosmetic dentistry, allowing you to enhance the appearance of your smile in as little time as possible. Veneers are simply bonded over the front of the teeth to create an aesthetically pleasing smile.

The Veneer Process

At your consultation appointment, our dental team will get a comprehensive overview of your oral health by taking intra and extra oral photographs, as well as impressions if needed. This information will be sent to our dental laboratory to craft your veneers to their required specifications, ensuring they fit your teeth perfectly.

During this first phase, we will prepare your teeth for your veneers. One of our dentists will remove a small amount of enamel from the tooth surface. This action ensures that once your veneers are affixed in place, they will sit in-line with the rest of your teeth. It may take 2-4 weeks for your dental veneers to return from the laboratory. We can, however, place temporary veneers on your teeth during this time to further prevent sensitivity or discomfort.

The final phase of the veneer procedure involves bonding your permanent veneers to your teeth. Your dentist will clean, polish and scrape the teeth to ensure a stronger bond. The veneers will then be cemented in place, then exposed to a light beam to harden the adhesive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I care for my veneers?

While veneers are more stain-resistant than a natural tooth, they still need to be brushed, flossed and examined during your twice yearly checkups.

How long can veneers last?

With proper care, veneers can last up to a decade or longer. It all depends on your oral health habits-if you maintain your regular checks and visits with us as well as practice proper habits, you shouldn’t have any problems with your new veneers.

Will veneers look like my natural teeth?

Absolutely. We’re proud to say that many of our patients let us know that their family members and friends aren’t able to tell that they’re wearing veneers because they look so natural and beautiful!

Will veneers ruin my teeth?

Veneers are typically used for correcting aesthetics of a tooth or teeth-this means that the tooth in question already has a problem-be it misshapen, crooked, or chipped. It’s necessary to file down your teeth slightly to place the veneer on top so that it fits appropriately. Veneers in no way “ruin” your teeth – they’re designed to help you look better.

Are getting veneers painful?

We pride ourselves on making the process extremely tolerable and comfortable. During the placement of veneers, we’ll always use an anaesthetic so that you’re relaxed and won’t feel a thing.
