Scale and Cleans
The Problem of Bacteria Buildup
Did you know that each day bacteria begin to develop in your mouth, clinging to your teeth and gums and forming a plaque biofilm? As teeth aren’t always perfectly shaped, it may be difficult to reach into every nook and cranny, particularly in the back, where food often seems to get stuck between tooth gaps. The result is the development of plaque. As a bacteria-filled sticky film, plaque transforms into acid when it bonds with the sugary foods you eat.
Why Prevention Is Key
Dutch scholar Desiderius Erasmus once said that prevention is better than cure. We agree; that’s why we recommend a preventative cleaning every six months to help maintain a healthy mouth and smile. Preventative checkups can ensure that the teeth and gums are healthy.
What Can I Expect?
During each scale and clean appointments, your dentist will carefully remove plaque and tartar accumulation that has gathered along the teeth and gums.
When the buildup is left on the teeth, these bacterial accumulations can cause periodontal (gum) disease-a condition that progresses to tooth and bone loss. Fortunately, with preventive care, it’s possible to preserve your natural teeth for a lifetime.
Caring for Your Smile at Home
To maintain healthy teeth and gums, it’s vital that you stick to a dedicated home care routine. We recommend brushing for at least two minutes twice a day, using a soft bristled brush. You also should floss at least once a day to clean the areas between the teeth and just below the gumlines.
Even the most disciplined brushers will experience small amounts of buildup between their checkups. If not attended to, the buildup can lead to symptoms of gingivitis. These include
- Swollen or tender gums
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing
- Food getting stuck between your teeth
