Your Child’s First Dental Appointment

Depending on the specific needs of your child, it’s best to have a dental checkup before their first birthday. This visit allows us to assess their bite and screen for any concerns that could impact their future smile. We will also discuss hygiene tips and diet choices that may affect their dental health.

In most cases, the baby will sit in your lap as one of our dentists performs a quick examination.

As your child becomes older (closer to the age of 7 or 8), we will also start taking X-rays to assess their developing oral anatomy. We screen for other concerns such as mouth breathing, tooth misalignment, tongue positioning and swallowing habits that can alter their biting patterns. Our dentists will monitor any findings to provide intervention when appropriate.

Routine Care Appointments

Most children benefit from a preventative clean and exam every six months. Our hygienists will provide services such as:

  • Scale, clean and polish
  • Preventative fluoride treatments
  • Protective sealants to block out cavities
  • Oral hygiene instruction
  • Nutritional counseling

Our primary goal is to give Maddington families the information they need to keep young smiles healthy into adulthood. Go Dental Surgery gladly accepts Children’s Dental Benefit Scheme vouchers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my child is nervous about visiting the dentist?

If your child is nervous about seeing us, rest easy-we’ll always do all that we can to make their visit extremely comfortable, relaxing and fun. We’ll let them know exactly what we’re doing when cleaning their teeth, and let them ask any questions they have. Most kids also love getting our goodie bag at the end!

How often should I book visits for my child?

We see children for regular dental visits on the same schedule as adults-every six months. As your child’s jaw and teeth grow and form, it’s important to stick to their appointments to ensure proper oral health.

Is my child a candidate for fissure sealants?

We’ll be happy to discuss this at your visit with us. Sealants are designed to be placed over the back molars to help keep cavities away and reduce plaque buildup in hard to reach places, which can be a life-saver for your pocketbook.

Will you perform cavities on baby teeth?

It is possible that baby teeth can get a cavity, in which case we may recommend having it filled. Even though the tooth will eventually be lost, not filling the cavity can have lasting effects on your child’s oral health.

How long does a children’s dental appointment last?

A children’s dental appointment with us will most likely last between 45 minutes to one hour. This gives us the adequate time needed to properly clean your child’s teeth and check that their oral health is thriving.
